Duncanville, Texas - Rep. Yvonne Davis (District 111) in conjunction with the Texas Historical Commission (THC) will recognize Ben Franklin Apothecary as a Texas Treasure Business Award winner on Sunday, October 19, 2014 at the DL Hopkins Senior Center in Duncanville.
Created in 2005 and coordinated through the THC, the Texas Treasure Business Award program recognizes well-established Texas businesses and their exceptional historical contributions to the state’s economic growth and prosperity. The Texas Treasure Business Award program pays tribute to businesses that have provided employment opportunities and support to the state’s economy for 50 years or more. To be eligible, businesses must have been in continuous for-profit operation in Texas for at least 50 years. Nominees must also continue to operate the same or a very similar type of business as they did and show a continuous record of employment for 50 years or more. Businesses must be nominated for this award by any elected state official or a business representative. Other distinguished recipients of the award include Adams Extract, Collin Street Bakery, H.E.B. Grocery Co., Natural Bridge Caverns, Renfro Foods, and many more!
Since 2005, the commission has given only 212 awards to businesses across the state (as of August 2014). The agency also has several nominations in the vetting process. According to Mark Wolfe, Executive Director of THC, “No other statewide award honors the for-profit business men and women of Texas for helping to make this state a leader in economic development and job creation, while simultaneously acknowledging that accomplishments such as this make history.” Representative Yvonne Davis added, "Ben Franklin has been and continues to be an integral part of the character and fabric which has sustained the City of Duncanville and its citizens. We are all proud of the contributions to our community that Ben Franklin has made and continues to offer to the region." The presentation of the Texas Treasure Business Award will take place during Ben Franklin's Golden Gala & 50th Anniversary Celebration on Sunday, Oct. 19, 2014. Ben Franklin Apothecary will also be celebrating their 50th Anniversary with a community-wide celebration on Saturday, October 18 that features a 5K Run/walk called the "Heart of Duncanville 5K "(all proceeds benefit the Duncanville ISD Education Foundation), a concert featuring Tim Urban (American Idol Top Ten finalist from the ninth season of the show), a vintage car show, and several activities for the entire family.
